Wudhu (also written as wudu or wuḍūʾ) is the Islamic act of washing specific body parts with water before prayer. It is a requirement for salah and is itself an act of worship.
When Do You Need Wudhu?
You need wudhu before:
- Salah (the five daily prayers)
- Touching or reciting the Quran
- Tawaf (circling the Ka'bah during Hajj or Umrah)
Your wudhu is broken by things like using the toilet, passing wind, sleeping deeply, or bleeding significantly.
The Steps of Wudhu
1. Make Your Intention (Niyyah)
Before starting, silently intend in your heart that you are performing wudhu for the sake of Allah. You do not need to say it out loud.
2. Say "Bismillah"
Begin by saying "Bismillah" (In the name of Allah).
3. Wash Your Hands
Wash both hands up to the wrists three times, making sure water reaches between your fingers.
4. Rinse Your Mouth
Take water into your mouth, swirl it around, and spit it out. Do this three times.
5. Clean Your Nose
Sniff water gently into your nostrils and blow it out. Do this three times.
6. Wash Your Face
Wash your entire face — from the hairline to the chin, and from ear to ear — three times.
7. Wash Your Arms
Wash your right arm from the fingertips to just above the elbow three times. Then do the same with your left arm.
8. Wipe Your Head
With wet hands, wipe over the top of your head from front to back and back to front. Do this once.
9. Clean Your Ears
Using wet fingers, wipe the inside of your ears with your index fingers and the outside with your thumbs. Do this once.
10. Wash Your Feet
Wash your right foot up to the ankle three times, making sure water reaches between your toes. Then do the same with your left foot.
After Wudhu
Once you have completed wudhu, you can say:
"Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh"
(I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.)
Tips for Beginners
- Don't rush — take your time to learn the steps properly.
- Use a moderate amount of water — Islam teaches us not to waste, even in wudhu.
- It gets easier — after a few days, wudhu will feel completely natural.
- If you're unsure whether your wudhu is broken, it is generally considered still valid. Certainty is not removed by doubt.
Wudhu is not just about physical cleanliness — it is a spiritual preparation. Each time you perform it, you are preparing your heart and body to stand before Allah in prayer.
